Cassandra Jean and I were discussing the seven deadly sins (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride) and the seven virtues (chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, humility) and it sparked a new project: which TMI/TID/TDA/TLH characters embody which virtues and vices? So have Benedict Lightwood, looking mighty creepy, embodying the vice of Lust with a demon lady.

Valentine Morgenstern como Orgullo.
The newest installment in Cassandra Jean’s Virtues and Vices series! The beautiful and talented Cassandra Jean and I were discussing the seven deadly sins (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride) and the seven virtues (chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, humility) and it sparked a new project: which TMI/TID/TDA/TLH characters embody which virtues and vices? And who to embody pride better than “I Will Not Serve” Valentine Morgenstern?Previous installment: Jem looking foxy and patient.

Envidia es representado por nada menos que Sebastian

And who to embody envy than Sebastian Morgenstern, driven by jealousy of everyone he thought was loved?Previous installment: Jem and Will being patient and kind.

Nathaniel Gray como la Gula.

cassandraclare:

Another in Cassandra Jean’s virtues and vices series! Nate, representing greed, since greed for power and money got him into the mess he was in, after all. And a question about Nate:
Hi Cassie, I had a question that was bothering me for a while now. In the Infernal Devices, I know Nate practically hands Tessa over to the Magister and kills his own mother. I know he has bad in him but I can’t believe he didn’t care for Tessa at all. They grew up together believing they were brother and sister and those feelings just don’t go away! I want to know if Nate, even if just a little, cared for Tessa at all? When he’s dying he tells her to keep her angel with her and he says “There is no forgiveness for- the kinds of things I’ve had to do.” So he acknowledges he was wrong, so in a way he can’t be all bad. He must have loved her some. But on the other hand he just a hands her away to Mortmain. Is there love there or am I imagining it? Also thank you for writing the Infernal Devices! They are my favorite books in the entire world :D — girlinthedrawingLove is complicated. It’s likely that Nate did care for Tessa on some level, but that emotion did not stop him from doing terrible things. Nate was extremely self involved, to the point where he ruined his own life. He had very little empathy for others. Were he alive today, he’d probably be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder.
That is one of the things about writing. When you start out, the impulse is to tell stories about good people who are good and do good things, and bad people who do bad things and are punished. Over time you realize those sort of characters largely do not interest us as they don’t feel true to life.
I’m going to quote Steven King here:Bad writing is more than a matter of shit syntax and faulty observation; bad writing usually arises from a stubborn refusal to tell stories about what people actually do—to face the fact, let us say, that murderers sometimes help old ladies cross the street.Nate was not entirely evil. Rarely is a character all bad or all good, and when they are, they aren’t very interesting to read about. Nate shared happy moments with Tessa when they were growing up, as well as difficult ones. An important part of writing is to keep in mind that characters, like real people, contain volumes. They can be capable of both good deeds and monstrous acts. Nate was not all bad, but his actions were horrible for the people who loved him, and in the end he could not save himself.

I forgot to hide the rune in this one. please don’t hurt yourselves looking for it.

VIRTUDES

Como Paciencia, tenemos a Jem Carstairs.

The newest installment in Cassandra Jean’s Virtues and Vices series! And who to embody patience better than Jem Carstairs?Previous installment: Benedict Lightwood, looking mighty creepy, embodying the vice of Lust with a demon lady.

William Herondale como Bondad.

Magnus Bane representado como Sabiduría.

Tessa Gray nos representa la Templanza.

cassandraclare:

Another in Cassandra Jean’s virtues and vices series! Tessa, representing temperance - temperance being moderation and restraint. I’ve always thought of Tessa as one of the more restrained heroines I’ve written, sometimes even to her detriment.
And a Tessa question:
I have a question that’s been kind of nagging me, and I don’t know if this topic will be touched in future books: Do you think that Tessa will have a harder time adjusting to life after Jem dies? When Will died, I feel like she had something to look forward to, like her yearly meeting with Jem. Now that that’s gone, do you think she’ll be okay? Do you think she’ll still be strong even though both her loves are gone? Hope all is well with you, xoxo! — theinfernaldevicestrilogyTessa’s future is unknown. She’s here with us, in our present timeline. Jem is not dead. Jem is nowhere near dead. Tessa rarely thinks about Jem dying, because she’s alight with the joy that they get to have this time together at all— time they never thought they’d have.Tessa’s yearly meeting with Jem was one thing she had to look forward to, but it wasn’t the only thing. She had Magnus and Ragnor and Catarina. She had other friends. She saw glorious sights and made her own life. I do think that Tessa is a strong, resilient person who can handle anything that is thrown at her. But keep in mind that immortality is not a guarantee of survival. Jem is mortal, but Tessa could still be killed. We don’t know for sure that Tessa will outlive Jem. We have no way of knowing who will die and when. What I’ve discovered while writing these characters— and Alec and Magnus too — is that part of leading a healthy life as an immortal is learning to embrace the moment and live fully in it. Obviously this is a good practice for us mortals, too! We each get the time that we get. We have no way of predicting how much time that will be. That’s the nature of death. Tessa and Jem have chosen not to let their lives be defined by mortality or immortality. Like Magnus and Alec, they’ve chosen to live each moment together as fully as they can. I’m not interested in speculating about what Tessa would do if/when Jem dies before her, a scenario that might not even happen, because I feel that doing so does a disservice to Tessa and Jem and the choices they’ve made and are making. I think it’s important to live in their uncertainty with them.

I remembered to hide the rune in this one.

Humildad, representado por Alec Lightwood.
